This is great news.  Hailstorm interoperability with the Liberty Alliance would mean that Microsoft would have to publish a set of APIs to the Open Source community for interfacing the Liberty framework with Hailstorm.  Is this Microsoft sticking it's toe in the Open Source waters?  I think so.  This would be a perfect set of applications to do it with.

It is interesting that Microsoft has placed so much focus on Lindows.  User interface and supported software are the two major things Microsoft clings to in the desktop environment.  If the operating system becomes commoditized, they will surely be replaced by cheaper, faster, better operating systems.  It is becoming increasingly clear that Microsoft much transform itself from a software company to a software services company.

Can Microsoft deliver 24x7 services? HELL NO!  They are a software company, not an operations company.  Bill, leave it to the carriers, ISPs, and managed hosting companies.  Buy one if you have to, but don't absorb it.  Operations guys can't survive in a software company and vice versa.
