I’ve received a lot of good feedback on I/O Tear Sheets. A colleague of mine suggested generalizing the format even more than I explained so that it could be used for reporting on topics, products, and events beyond storage by various subject matter experts (SMEs). This is a fantastic idea. To accomplish this a XML format needs to be created to represent the specific elements and content to be captured. I would have used a format like this for reporting the DARPA Grand Challenge, the EMC Technology Summit, and producing the I/O Tear Sheet on LeftHand Networks. A format like this would be perfect for publishing and exchanging research reports, product reviews, and detailed event reporting. We want to learn from RSS in creating a specific format for specific reports containing in-depth content. As a matter of fact, RSS would be the indexing format fronting this reporting format. RSS is a perfect launch pad for more specific formats targeted at accomplishing specific tasks. I’d like to invite others to participate in the creation of this format. Drop me a comment with your feedback or email me if you want to be join the fray.
