Here's a very cool article on creating
an alerting web service that sends alerts to Outlook 2003. They have used alerting on new RSS items as the example. If a news reader like Newsgator implemented this, I could designate specific RSS feeds to be critical and receive alerts on them. I can see a number of applications for this. Functionality like this will drive further adoption and integration of RSS into applications.
