After doing the first Podcast of TechFire, I've been thinking about an optimal way to record Podcasts on my PowerBook. After doing some research, I'm not sure that an application exists that will effectively allow the control of audio running through my computer in the fashion I need to be able to record Podcasts on a single computer completely with software. An audio virtualization layer needs to be created for Mac OS X that enables you to take audio input from USB or any application simultaneously, create channels, run them through a virtual mixing board, and out to single or multiple output source. The key is being able to control the output for any channel/input in a granular fashion from volume to equalizer levels, just like a real mixing board. Below is a diagram of this.

Soundflower creates a global audio space with virtual devices, but this just doesn’t cut it for recording conversations. I’ve got to imagine that applications like this exist. I just haven’t been able to find one. If you know of one, please drop me a comment.
