Amazon.com: The Platfrom

The first keynote session of the Gartner Enterprise Architecture Summit was given by Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com. Werner explained how Amazon.com has developed from a simple online bookstore to a platform that drives innoviation in ways that no one within Amazon could ever imagine. One very cool example he demonstrated was the Hive Group’s implementation of shopping Amazon using Honeycomb. Werner also conveyed some diry little platitudes that most business people don’t want to hear.

  • Scaling is all about exploiting easy, greedy, and lazy techniques
  • Practice apology oriented computing. It’s good for you.

Which part? The last two bullets are cynical anecdotes about scaling and data center operations. The firt bullet point is focused on scaling horizontally using a lowest common deomonator approach. The second bullet is to emphasize that you must engineer for failure. As far as Amazon.com being a platform, their web services catalog is quite impressive. These web services have generated innovations that Amazon would not have considered or developed internally. Yet another example of a flattening world.
