Phil Windley attended Jim Gray's talk at the Organick Memorial Lecture at the University of Utah this afternoon. Grey spoke on distributed computing economics. [Windley's Enterprise Computing Weblog]
This is a great article. Articles like this highlight the fact that Open Source, computing, bandwidth, and storage are not free, as analysts, press, and vendors would have you believe. Jim Grey has a number of great publications on the economics of computing. I particularly like his paper on the Distributed Computing Economics, from which his example in his speech is drawn.
